Kraig Hagler, Greene County Auditor and Executive Chair of the Republican Party, has decided it’s a crime for a journalist he dislikes to dare dine in an establishment where he is present. As I enjoyed a delicious dinner and Hagler walked by, I decided to begin recording in case something of public interest would happen. Little did I know that Hagler would immediately make a scene by calling the cops and accusing me of “harassing him.” Perhaps this was because I made the mistake of politely saying “hello.” I believed it to be a cordial act, but Hagler would not let such aggression stand. Fearing that I might engage in further aggression—maybe by asking how he was doing or commenting on the food—Hagler ran to management and demanded they call the police to have me forcibly removed.
There has been a pattern of behavior among our elected officials. They believe that they’re above reproach and above the law. In their minds, having the gall to acknowledge their presence is a violent act of harassment.
